I've only ever known a couple of top-rank mathematicians and they both seemed to have their brains "wired-up" differently from normal people. Is this true?

Don't want to upset the feminists but I once knew a top-rank psychoanalyst and she reckoned that all Surgeons where (at heart) destructive.
And also that no woman would ever make a top-class commited chess player because their brains were continually tuned to hear a baby's crying !

Hi there, thx for your answers. There was a UK TV program about the great Indian Ramanujam. One of the Professors told the story of how he took a cab to visit Ram.And mentioned that the cab's number was 1729:"not a very interesting number"
Ram's eyes lit up "Oh! " he said "it is a very interesting number:
It is the smallest number that can be expressed as the sum of two cubes,in two different ways"
On TV the Prof. said "Every number was a personal friend to Ram:he loved each one"
General opinion is that Ram died young because he "forgot" to eat.

Nearly forgot, cubes are of course:
10^3+9^3 and 12^3+1^3

Well, I suppose working differently makes your brain abnormal by definition, but I'd submit there is a difference between abnormal and crazy. In this case, I'd say the abnormality makes them better thinkers, at least when it comes to math.

To be a top-sank methematician ,i do not believe you should be a bit crazy. Of course you should study and work hard and be interested in math.
Sometime ago ,i always thought talents must have somethings which are very specific .
People alway make talents up that how crazy they are constrainedly.
You can be a gentle or mild top-rank mathematician.
About football, people always thing that player should be rough but there are some player are very gentle. So i think
to be a top-sank mathematician you do not need to be crazy.
I really do believe that no any job was influenced by people's
temper or character.
Football player can be gentle althought it is rarely happen.
mathematician awalys crazy but that is not the key to be
a top-rank mathematician.
If you are good enought ,you can be a gentle mathematician.

I have a maths degree and I'm definitely crazy (though I've never been sectioned!). I like numbers because there is a right answer, and I find this is very satisfying. If you write an essay and the examiner disagrees with your point of view, you won't get the marks, but 3 x 4 is ALWAYS 12.

It seems to me that mathematicians have highly developed right-hemispheric functions - they can see patterns and are offten intuitive - similar to chess playing for instance. For some reasons males seem to have greater right-hemispheric abilities than females
Most people have highly-developed left-hemispheric functions - speech, language, logic etc so yes I would say that mathematicians are wired up differently. I would not necessarily call this 'crazy' - just unusual

I think you have to be different to get to the top in anything, but for maths I would agreed with you. I know a young lad who is possibly destined for great things, and he is certainly on a different planet.
I once asked his mum if he was concussed, but apparently he always looks like that.

no one has the same brain.
alot of mathematicians i know (including me) use mathematics to look at the world.
i see x^2+y^2 = 1, you see a round shape..
the difference between your view and mine is that i draw conclusions youll have more trouble getting to. thats why many people prefer to look at the world this way.

I think mathematicians might argue that they are normal and everyone else has a loose wire or two!
