Since the DVD player was working before, it is unlikely that you need to add a card. It sounds more like the software for playing the DVDs was accidently deleted.
Check the disc that came with your computer and see if you have a disk with DVD playing (or burning) software. Rerunning that disk would probably fix the problem.

Well with kids it looks like they must have gone download crazy and downloaded something that conflicts with it, no you do not need a video card unless they are doing some crazy gaming. Virus scan possibly, but don't do a system restore, most likely you haven't set a system restore point and its kind of pointless to do so, do a complete format and if your pc came with the recovery cds use that and format the pc and do a clean install, when you have that all done then set up firewall and antiv virus software so they won't download viruses. Also do not allow your kids to use limewire, and tell them to not download anything from any sites that are poorly made or just look stupid.

You will not need a card. It sounds as though one of your kids had deleted files crucual to letting dvd be played. Do a system restore, make sure all your important files are backed up on cd first.

well if you have been playing dvds before its unlikely you'll need anything other than what you've already got-it sounds like there is a fault with the dvd drive....take it in for repair and let an expert have a look at it

couple things to try
1: Buy a disc cleaner, sold at most any electronics store for usually under $10 or so
2: IF that doesn't work
Click on START
Click on COMTROL PANEL
Click on SYSTEM
Click on HARDWARE
Click on DEVICE MANAGER
Click on the + beside CD\DVD Drives
Click on your DVD Drive
RIGHT Click and then select UNINSTALL
Shutdown your cmputer (NOT Restart)
Wait at least 2-3 minutes
Restart your computer, Windows should find the drive and Reinstall the drivers for it

Once you set it right, give the kids their own logins, set them as non-administrators, this will prevent them from damaging anything critical. If you have your own account any changes they make will not change your settings.
