Anyone else know two whole numbers that can be divided to get a more accurate approximation of pi?

A series which approximates PI would be the following:

4(1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11 ...... )

To obtain whole number approximations of PI, just add one more number in the series.

You can always get a better approximation by going to bigger numbers. However, 355/113 is remarkably good - two three-digits numbers gives you accuracy to six decimal places. In fact, there are no four-digit integers that give a better approximation. (There was a post below - no longer there - that the next improvement doesn't come until the denominator is 16604. It's too bad the poster deleted his entry, as I think that is a very interesting point.)

As for a better one, um... how about 31415926535 / 10000000000?

31415923077 / 9999998899 is accurate to the 12th decimal place. My guess is that's accurate enough for most calculations.

your second approx is about as good as you can get for numbers below 1000.
supposedly discovered by the Chinese

It is impossible to divide two whole (integer) numbers to obtain pi because pi is an irrational number.

Two whole number divided one by the other gives a rational number.
