Vinegar and hot water is safe. It needs to soak a while though.

Clorox bleach. Pour it in, fill it up. Let set 5 minutes and then, you can actually pour it back into the bottle of bleach. Then just rinse in hot water. If there is a little residue of the stain left, brush lightly with a bottle brush. (This is the easiest way I have found!) You can also clean tea stains this way. Coffee mugs can be cleaned this way as well.

I would suggest baking soda and vinegar. I use it all the time in my stainless steal tea pot. It works wonders. Soak it a bit then scrub. If it is stained bad you may have to do it again.

Try filling the mug with lemons and water, then add salt and swish it around. You may have to let it soak overnight, but it should loosen the stains enough for you to just wipe them out.

get this stuff called Medallion stainless steel cleaner. I use it at the restaurant I work at. Just make sure you rinse the inside out extensively after using the product as it is not for consumption.

Also hydrogen peroxide will clean most organic stains ( the kind you use in your laundry. Baking soda and a brush works too.
