Check under the lint screen for build up; could just be extra lint on the heating element.

dryers have a cool down phase at the end of the cycle. The element is switched off and the fan runs to cool it down before switching of the tumble. If you open the door mid cycle, the fan stops and the element will be hot, Without the tumble / fan action the dryer will start to heat the guts. The dust and the guts are what you then smell. The element is also prone to cracking and destroying itself faster. If you need to open up, move your cycle to the end for a few minutes to let the element cool bbefore opening the door. This will preserve your machine and give it a longer life.

Clean out your dryer vents. The vents often clog up and the heat has nowhere to go. Many fires happen because of lint clogged vents!
The longer the ducting the more the vents can clog.
Many people forget to clean the lint filter after each use, and a full lint filter can cause fires.

Could be you need to clean your lint filter, or your exhaust vent is clogged. If you're doing any painting in the house, that can also be pulled into the dryer and give it a burnt smell.

It sounds like there really is a smoldering of lint in the hoses. Take care of it before it bursts into flames. Clear out the dryer lint screen. Get a dryer hose brush and poke it through the hose to push out clogging lint.

Probably a buildup of lint. This can be very dangerous and can cause a serious fire. Check below the lint trap and where the vent hose exits the dryer.

Clean the lint screen and around it. Don't put any synthetic material in the dryer. Check your outlet, make sure its not overloaded or short circuit.
