I can't put the mp3s I buy at AppleTunes on my iPod and I own a Mac! It tells me my software is too old, but I definitiely have the latest software. And it doesn't happen with the mp3s I load into my computer from my CDs.

I tried throwing out all the preference files and re-booting... same problem. Apple says the problem is not in the iPod, because the same thing happens to both my iPod & my wife's iPod. They said I could try a system re-install... like I really wanna re-install everything?!?!?!?!

Any suggestions before I reinstall everything?

I own an iMac from 2003, with OSX 10.3.9 installed...

Oh I have reformatted it already... and the firmware is up to date... I also have the latest iTunes installed...

Since it also affects my wife's iPod nano... it HAS to be something in my computer...

The store changes the format of the protected aac files they sell every few years! Apple doesn't sell mp3 files.

With each major change they permit you to upgrade the music. OS X 10.3.9 is a bit old, and the latest iTunes may not work right. Try to upgrade!

Re-installing won't help much, Upgrading will. If you can't afford the upgrade right away, You can burn the store bought aac files to a cd, and rip them back as mp3s.

UPDATE: Burn some cds quickly!
make playlists out of the purchased songs, then burn the playlist to a cd. re-mount the cd and rip the music back!

Make sure the preferences are set to burn as a standard audio cd. When you rip them back use a high bitrate (190+) and save them as mp3 or unprotected AAC.

Maybe restore ipod to factory settings will help then just update ipod to latest software from scratch. Go here:

I doubt it is an OS issue. Maybe try reinstalling iTunes as well.

Also in preferences change import settings to one of the mp3 qualities, rip the music to cd and then import them back to library and it will be in mp3 format then. I doubt your OS is the issue. 10.3.9 is not old, as it is only outdated by Tiger. Once Leopard comes out you may want to think about upgrading. I know people who use Jaguar and things work fine.
