In Greek mythology, the Lernaean Hydra was an ancient serpent-like chthonic water beast that possessed numerous heads— the poets mention more heads than the vase-painters could paint— and poisonous breath (Hyginus, 30). The Hydra of Lerna was killed by Heracles as one of his Twelve Labours. Its lair was the lake of Lerna in the Argolid, though archaeology has borne out the myth that the sacred site was older even than the Mycenaean city of Argos, for Lerna was the site of the myth of the Danaids. Beneath the waters was an entrance to the Underworld, and the Hydra was its guardian (Kerenyi 1959, p. 143).

The Hydra was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna (Theogony, 313), noisome offspring of the earth goddess, Gaia. It was said to be the sibling of the Nemean Lion, the Chimaera and Cerberus. The Greek word for arrow, which is toxon, is closely related to the Greek word for poison, which is toxis, thus the poison arrows that Heracles created from the Hydra's blood. Associations with the Nemaean lion may derive from recreating the surrounding narrative to suit an order in which the tale of the Hydra follows that of the lion.

That there is a really small animal - could be platonic, something really simple - that is also called the Hydra is it splits itself to reproduce. Just google search it - it could be a little interesting fact or joke you put in there.

You could say that scientists have found out that the Hydra exists... but you can only see it under the lense of a microscope - something like that.

hahaha. it's cool that you're interested, just your question sounds really funny :-) (I need to know it's personality!) hon, if anybody knows that, i'd be very surprised. maybe try to find diff stories that the hydra is involved in and see how it acted towards the other characters in the story. i'm gonna place my bet on: Grouchy.

Some interesting facts: well Heracles ended up dying of its poison, and after death the creature ended up as one of the ghostly monsters that guarded the entrance of the land of the dead.
