I like Kid Knits by Sarah Bradbury! Any book to instruct children on knitting is super easy step by step guides and great pictures. Another is Kids Can Knit by Carolyn Clewer. I teach knitting to fifth graders and they love to try out the patterns.

I also do interlibrary loans to check out the books before I buy them. If I think they're not useful, I won't have wasted the money on buying them.

There are lots of DVDs on knitting instruction also. I find it easier to learn that way but that's just me. Libraries also can do the interlibrary loan thing with DVDs.

Good Luck! Knitting is such a great hobby!

I know how to knit but I checked out this book from the library and saw that it would be a GREAT starter book for someone. It has really cool patterns too. The beginning of the book teaches you everything you need to know and how to knit, and then every pattern it has gets a little harder and harder, so you learn a little more as you go.

It's called "Teen Knitting Club: Chill Out and Knit" by: Jennifer Wenger, Carol Abrams and Maureen Lasher

Here's a website for it at Amazon, looks like it's only about 13 bucks.

Lionbrand's web site has a lot of free patterns that indicate skill level, the pictures are good and instructions easy to read.

I have quite a library of knitting books but find I only end up making one or two projects from the book so it's hard to justify the expense.

Books that I personally loved and learned how to knit from are

Stitch N ***** The Knitter's Handbook by Debbie Stoller
Stitch N ***** Nation by Debbie Stoller
and my most fave is
Encyclopedia of Knitting by Donna Kooler (teaches you the in's and out's of knitting as well as different stitch patterns, and how to make the correct increase for your project)
http://www.amazon.com/Donna-Koolers-Encyclopedia-Knitting-Kooler/dp/1574862839/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-7118955-4066446?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177701286&sr=1-1

Other books I would recommend
You could also check out (while I haven't actually looked at the book but going based on their other titles) Knitting for Dummies

Or
Teach Yourself Visually Knitting by Sharon Turner
