The original cartridge goes in either way,as long as it fits in the groove. The other kind (bio-3 goes in with the cotton facing the out side and the black part facing the tank

I have a Balenyata aquatic filter. I am always confused as to what side goes where. But thanks for the guidance. I am now going to put the black grooves facing the inside and the blue cotton facing the outside. Just one question. Why is it recommended you place the blue cotton filter but not the charcoal colored filter?

Yea mine is the same as Joe.s It is just a cotton cartdridge with carbon in the middle and it slides right into place. Doesnt matter which side is facing forward.

My Whisper has a bio-bag. It slides into a groove. Doesn't matter which way it faces. Be sure to rinse it to get all the carbon dust out!

I'm pretty sure it goes in the front so that the cotton part can capture all the yucky stuff!

Doesn't matter at all. Either way will get the job done just as well.
