You can see the sites he visited in the INDEX.DAT file, it is not erased automatically.

Here is an INDEX.DAT free scanner:

and a Real Eraser, for your son:

Some anti-virus programs come with monitoring software that allows you to see what websites have been visited. I believe the Norton suite does so.

As for blocking adult sites, you're SOL. You'll never be able to completely block them and most of the blocking software contains spyware to boot. Be a parent and tell your kid that if he's going to delete his history/cookies, then he can't go online anymore. That's what my dad did with me when I was younger.

One really good idea is to install an inexpensive broadband router that you can use to block sites, monitor traffic going in and out, and help increase your home network's security.

For example, $50 Linksys wired and wireless routers will let you do all that, including monitoring a list of visited websites.

The best way, though, to monitor your kid's internet usage is to set rules and monitor the thing in person. Put the PC in a public space in the house, not in his/her bedroom. Lock it in a closable PC desk cabinet unit. Talk with him/her about content on the internet. There is no substitute for attentive parenting (and I am not accusing you of being inattentive, merely pointing out that the personal method is more effective than any technology solution).

Rather than doing patch up after an event has occured, it's better to avoid the situation. So use softwares like Net Nanny to block adult contents from loading and preventing access to adult websites.

if he deletes history and cookies it's very difficult to find out what sites he's been on but if you're using IE7 you can block adult content very easily you need to open IE7 then click on tools > internet options then click the content tab at the top of the dialogue box you'll see Content advisor click the enable button you should be able to work the rest out for your self

Move your kid's PC to the living room, dining room or the kitchen and keep a close eye on them.

The foolishness will stop immediately.

Children should never be allowed any privacy on a computer until they're over 18, and have been taught about the dangers, IMHO.
