you just take your nails and pinch the very tip of a growing branch.. it's tender vegetation, so it's easy to do..

If you haven't bitten your fingernails and if you know your goal it is easy. Think about what you are getting rid of (like side shoots on tomatoes or faded flowers on bushes). Then just pinch those parts that need removal between your fingernails and rip them off. If you are a nail biter use a teeny scissors but fingernails are easier as the tool.
