Before dessert? After dessert? What if other people are having dessert and Im not? What if we are all done with our meals but keep chatting? Can I put the napking on the table then?

Is it more appropriate to fold the napkin? Ive heard that one shouldnt fold it, so the server knows it has been used...

You should fold it or place it nicely next to your plate when you have finished eating, it helps let the server know that you've finished with your meal and they can take away your plate

You put the napkin on your lap when you first sit down at the table. You unfold it over your lap. You put the napkin on the table usually when you are finished eating dinner unless you are positive you are having dessert. Even if you do have dessert, you could still put your napkin on the table before then.

As soon as you are finished with your meal.
Fold and place the napkin next to your plate.
So that, the server may clear, what is necessary,
from the table, to make room for what is to come.
If you are having desert, your server, should bring
you another napkin. No desert, no worries.
Trust me, all the napkins, on the table, used
or not, will end up in the same laundry pile.

After dessert. If you are not having desert you can remove it when others are almost through with theirs. Its okay to put it on the table folded, just not the way it was initially done.

I would say when you are done eating put it neatly on or next to your plate. Or if you are that worried about it, leave it on your lap until you leave and then place it on the table.
