At my last appointment I REALLY wanted to know if I was dialated, but she didn't check (and I didn't ask). Is there anyway to tell on your own if you are dialated at all? I don't mean like feeling for myself, or determining how many centimeters, but are there any signs that you are dialating like if your mucous plug comes out or something like that?

The only way to tell whether a patient is dilated is to manually exammine the cervix.

You could try yourself but I wouldn't recommend it - not only is it hard to reach but if your cervix is soft you may accidentally injure yourself. Plus, unless you're trained, if difficult to know what you're actually looking FOR, or what it is supposed to feel like.

Don't be aftraid to ask your doctor or midwife to exammine you. It's your pregnancy, your body. Just ask.

No you cant check on your own, once you reach 36 weeks you will be checked. My mucus plug came out a couple of weeks before I started dialating so that doesn't have anything to do with it.

Whatever you do please dont go by the last poster, and try checking your own cervix, too much risk of introducing infection, which could cause even more problems..it took me 3 months of clinicals to learn what the difference between 3cm and 7cm was. No way you will be able to tell just how far "dilated" your cervix actually is.

The only way I know of is to check it. Just be very careful, and use a clean hand or glove. Good Luck! Oh, and don't do it too often, you don't want to irritate anything.... (:

Here is a guide on how to do it, and what to look for....

the only way to be checked is to have a professional do it - either by an internal speculum or exam or have a scan

if you are concerned you are dialating, see your gp / midwife

you may have a mucus plug 'show' / bleeding to show you you are dialating, but that doesnt happen with everyone

Nope. No way of knowing without being checked. They will probably start checking you everytime you go those last 3-4 appts.

Really the only way to tell if you are dilated is to physically reach in and check yourself. There aren't any symptoms until you are dilated past 5 cm. Then your symptoms are labor.
