"After five days of hard marching and heavy losses, the Confederates faced McClellan's army at Malvern Hill. Although the position could not be flanked, Lee recognized it ws his last opportunity to destroy the Union army, and therefore launched an attack on July 1st,. The combination of poor staff coordination and the inability to bring more than a fraction of the Confederate artillery up to support the piecemeal attacks of Lee's divisons produced a predictable result. Porter, not McClellan, conducted a skillful defence, assisted by the outstanding collection and direction of the Federal artillery under Colonel Henry J. Hunt.
For all purposes, the Peninsula Campaign was over, although McClellan's army remained at Harrison's Landing until August. Lee successfully blunted the threat to Richmond. Union casualties during the Seven Days' Battles numbered about 16,000 Union casualties, while Lee's forces, attacking wih a smaller army, had sustained nearly 20,000 casualties."

Battle Summary:McCllelan's forces advanced to within 15 miles of Richmond. On June 26th, Lee's forces attacked Union forces at Mechanicsville. The Union forces were victorious, but McClellan ordered a withdrawal to Gaines' Mill. There, Confederate forces broke Union lines the next day. McClellan then ordered a general withdrawal. Three more battles were fought, including one at Malvern Hill, in which Confederate troops were slaughtered, in an ill advised attempt to scale it. In the end however, McClellan withdrew all of his troops to Harrison Landing. in other word, Mc Celellan was a bone head. he kept retreating when in fact he was slaughtering the confederate army.
