I'd never thought of it like that before, but I guess it's true.

LOL that is funny but the answer is no the lottery takes luck. With the stock market with proper research you can make money. Also if you keep a safe stock for a long time you are almost guaranteed to make money. I have heard you have a greater chance of getting hit by a bus than winning the lottery. But also you don't have to be rich to play the stock market. There are cheap stock or like in my case my employer takes so much out of my check every two weeks towards stock.

Not at all.

With some discipline, some knowledge, and a little luck, you can make money there. And notice I didn't say anything about having to be a genius, or financial guru. The market is open to anyone who wants to start a retirement account, or college fund, or other savings program. And when the market moves up, it carries the fortunes of many, many people up with it.

The lottery, however, only helps about 3-4 people. Most of the rest of them lose their investment. Granted, it's only a couple of bucks for most of them, but it's still completely gone. If you put that $100 a year into the stock market, and it drops 20% (a huge drop, btw) you still have $80 left.

From where I stand, the lottery is a tax on people who flunked 5th grade math.

No. I make my living as an independent investor. I'd sure hate to try making my living from the lottery.

Short-term stock trading is more like betting on horse races, I'd say. You DO have some relevant data available to you, so your stock and bond selection is not nearly as random as buying a lottery ticket.

If you're willing to diversify & invest for the long term, then it is more like buying real estate, renting it out, and planning to perhaps sell some day when the price has gone up enough.
