Dow Chemical was hellbent on covering the world in nylon and rayon, and they were afraid of hemp products' higher quality and the fact that they were cheaper to produce. Thought it would put them out of business. So they cozied up to the politicians and *poof* cannabis is illegal.
Figures, doesn't it? That's why I boycott Dow Chemical.

To create government jobs while keeping the unemployment rate low (locking them up) especially for those who are poor.
As the manufacturing jobs left in record numbers,
the government started a war on people giving nonviolent drug offenders sentences as long as murderers, even longer than actual murderers,
they supplied the poor with new jobs: selling drugs/using drugs while at the same time enlarged the government, creating more government jobs and money coming into states and federal agencies and courts.
The drug companies, chemical companies, lumber industry also have an interest in criminalizing certain plants.
Do you know who is on the entire board of The Partnership for a Drug Free America?
former pharmaceutical businessmen,
namely Johnson and Johnson.

Pimarily due to the historical and current power (political and economic) of the alcohol and tobacco industries. It is important for both of those industries that marijuana remain illegal, so as to decrease competition.
In addition, the maintainence of marijuana as illegal provides a powerful tool for the executive branch to arbitrarily and capriciously prosecute elements in society that it finds unpleasant.

It also befell to be a vice of the better classes. So both the lawmakers and the folk were in want of it for the longest time. Now that there is more advantageous be conscious of-how of that's risky outcomes that is in simple terms too late to regulate because of the tobacco industries helpful lobbies and the actual undeniable actuality that that is a own decision. traditionally a nicely regularly occurring drug in a subculture is in simple terms about no longer plausible to get rid of, take a inspect prohibition in US heritage. if you're argueing for marijuana notwithstanding you at the instantaneous are unlikely to win because there in simple terms are not sufficient customers. This united states of america remains a democracy and all it might want to take is an quite prosperous foyer and a large grassroots marketing campaign..... yup that is all it might want to take.....

Up to an ounce is decriminalized in 5 states.
Which means if you have under an ounce they just take it and can't press charges. Over and they get you for distribution.

I believe the main reason is money. Look at how much money our government, courts, lawyers, etc. make off a simple pot bust. Now, imagine if they didn't have all of that coming in. They can't afford to make it legal!
