Give up smoking or have a notice on the wall that says 'No Puffin' for your guests!
If you and your guests don't smoke and instead you've left the saucepan on the stove and burnt the potatoes or just ruined your husband's favourite pair of boxer shorts with the iron, then open all the windows and the door for a while. If that doesn't do the trick I guess you could try some of those really smelly pot pouri room deodorisers that anaethsetise your nose and hope for the best....

A sure way, without gimmicks, is to put in an Electrostatic Filter on your furnace or air handler and turn on the blower and let it run. The science behind the use of Electrostatic filters indicates it will remove odor such as that of which you are experiencing.
What is happening, is that your room air is constantly being loaded with minute particulate from the residue left from the original fire smoke which is laden on the walls, windows, woodwork, and nearly everywhere in the room. So a quick venting of the house by opening a window dilutes that particulate but it still keeps coming. So once the windows are closed, it will again reappear.
That is why the Electrostatic filter will circulate the air and continually remove these particulates and you will not smell them as they are being continuously removed from the air.
An Electrostatic Filter will remove not only dust and particulate it will remover ODOR and it will remove smoke, it will remove mold, mildew, viruses, bacteria and particles down to the most microscopic.
One can buy an Electrostatic filter that will fit most slots of an ordinary furnace, however, the best filter is a whole house filter which has plate precipitators on it and handles a much higher volume of air moving across it.

believe it or not its very simple. get a damp tea towel. either use water or a water and vinegar mix. and spin the tea towel above your head for a few minutes. the vinegar neutralise's the smell and because the tea towel is wet it catches the little particles of air that carry the odour.
