Neither - It's a lame story actually. You need to look at the source of your info. First off, they need a good story. If the answer is accurate = no "dumb" American story. Also - who exactly did they ask? Most polls are crap - again, trying to drum up a story. Sounds like a slow news day. Just provocation and upholding basic European stereotypes of Americans. Not all Americans are ignorant or arrogant. Would you call Kurt Vonnegut dumb, arrogant or ignorant? Gore Vidal? I could list many a name, but why bother....
Ignore such silly polls. I am sure that French, German and even American newspapers/media have run similar fluff articles that take the p*ss about the English as well. By the way, I'm American (big suprise, huh?) have worked in media so I know the deal, and yes, I know that he isn't American. By the way, did you see him floating weightless this week? That was a news worthy story. The rest is gibberish.

Perhaps both... Americans seem more interested in politics than science. The worse thing is (probably) they think the source of advances in science & technology is America. Actually other nations such as UK & Germany also contribute plenty to science.

1000 pardon for interjecting Oh great Wizard - maximum individuals might never heard of it because of fact (and that i would be incorrect approximately this - yet...) from what I even have heard, it incredibly is an unlawful substance over there. I even have heard of comments of people having a jar of Vegemite of their luggage and grew to become into confiscated at customs. curiously it contains something that's banned via the FDA (or some reason to that nature) i'm hoping this clears it up somewhat. Well, in all fairness, the man communicates via computer. He sounds like a robot, which doesn't give the person a chance to know that he's not American.
I have always known his heritage, but you'd be surprised to find out how many people don't even know him.

I knew he was born in Oxford England on Jan 8th 1942 and his middle name is William, but not all the other stats. Well done in your research and fact finding.

Both ignorance and arrogance. However, I have been led to believe that your media isn't very informative, so it's very understandable.

Ignorance I would say - in news reports etc they just refer to him as Stephen Hawking, not 'the British scientist Stephen Hawking'....
