Are you referring to banknote? It is made out of special paper. It won't be torn when gets wet. Sometimes it is made out of a kind of plastic.

Coins usually are made of metal, although some countries issue plastic coins. Several centuries ago people used gold money for transaction, but now gold coins are very rare, only for collection. The price is quite high. It's not feasible to make gold coins, especially high carats gold coins.
