While Democrats would love for you to believe they have power over the price of gasoline, this is far from true. The laws of supply and demand affect gasoline prices, in combination with the speculation on the futures market, which is affected by world events, such as unrest in Iraq and Iran.

The reason prices have recently risen is mostly due the fact that refineries nationwide shut down for maintenance in the spring and there were some freak, unplanned shutdowns which impacted supply. With less gasoline to go around, prices rise.

Why do prices rise at all the stations? Because gasoline refiners and marketers sell to each other before they sell to you. If one company is short because their refinery is shut down, they can buy on the exchange market from other companies. This makes the gasoline on the exchange more valuable to them and prices rise. If Exxon Mobil can make more selling gas to Shell or Chevron than they can selling it to you, that's exactly what they do. This makes every gallon at the wholesale level identically priced.

I know all this because I've worked for a major Oil company for years and watched the process in action.

All the government can do is tax profits and when they do that, they hurt all of us. Best to let the market control prices and profits, it's a much better method.

Don't get me started on the price of gas. It is ridiculous and makes it harder for U.S. families in an already hard enough economy. It is forecasted that gas could go beyond $4 a gallon this summer. But, didn't the President refuse to sign a bill which would reinstitute the Crude Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act when the last Congress was in session? It was said that that bill would have reduced the prices and made the multi-billion dollar fuel industry more accountable.

Let's drive less, walk or ride our bikes more!
This is so out of control! Some families are suffering through difficult times, financially, because of gas! The cost of living and feeding a family is up because of gas? Please, help me understand. Are we driving more or is it the war? The American Dream!
