what does the future hold

with conventional means it would take thousands of years even to reach the closest star system approx 4.5 light years away. generation ships would be needed or reliable hybernation devices for ships.
even with near ftl drives for space travel it would still take years not to mention causality effects. plus the energy needed would be stupendous.
it will take a new branch of physics to come up with a drive to get us to the stars, if possible at all.
however all is not lost, scientist and theorist physicist are trying to piece together a mammoth piece of work called the ''theory of everything'' if/when completed it might give us that branch of physics needed to tranverse the heavens.

as things stand there are many theorectical drives out there such as the ALCUBIERRE DRIVE or warp drive similar to the drive system on the 'star trek' ships.

another option would be to create or find wormholes. but the knowledge for all these theories to be proven or not is way off in the furture. hopefully sooner than later.

One day we will be able to travel at close to the speed of light. I understand that the speed of light itself is an impossibility to attain, but they have been wrong before!

The most interesting fact is that when you are at these speeds, your ageing process slows down and may stop altogether, in which case after many light years journeying through space you can still arrive fresh and ready to explore.

I think it is Gods plan that we should go otherwise, that last fact would not have existed.

Those you left behind on earth would have gone to the "great beyond" light years before though...ah and you might find them waiting for you on the planet you end up at only that will be a statistical miracle considering the number of planets in the galaxy.

The near future holds nothing. The far future might hold some technology for crafts to travel at near the speed of light. Otherwise, building a craft that can only travel like 50 mps means we would have to have immense amounts of food/water/fuel/oxygen. Hope I was some help. 8)-|--<

Technology will have to be developed that makes near light speed possible. Even at those speeds, it would take many years to reach our nearest celestial neighbor. An alternative would be a theory which allows space travel through worm holes which allows the speed of light to be exceeded, thus reducing the time needed for space travel.

Doesn't look good unless we can develop propulsion systems that do not carry their propulsion mass with them. Many Sci-Fi authors have suggested possible systems such as using lasers for light propulsion, solar sails etc. We have ion drives - but don't know if they can capture sufficient material en-route to eject.

If we can obtain 1g acceleration for periods of a year then stellar travel becomes possible (1 year to reach near speed of light) - time dilation - 1 year to slow down

So far, human kind has been able to break all kinds of natural laws. Gravity broken by airplanes and space shuttles for one example. What makes everyone think the speed of light and the rule of relativity cannot be broken in the future? Humankind thought the same about gravity before the 20th century.

I do not doubt that the human race can someday develop close to light speed travel (0.8 - 0.9 C). Even then, we must also develop cryogenic hibernation or build starships that are generational where the great-grandchildren of the original crew are the ones that arrive at the distant location.

Well I think that GOD may not want us to communicate at all. That is so far that if they had an antenna pointed at us we would not be there any more. Every things moving. If we have a transmitter and we sync it with the earth that beam will not get to the other planet.

We never will so long as people insist on keeping their thinking inside the box. Just look at all of these respondants talking about "near light speeds."
Things are only impossible until they're not, people.
