Computer use as a phone?

I am running Vista Home premium. I want to connect my dial up phone line to the modem and use the computer as aphone. I am not interested in buying anything or trying to make calls over the internet, I want to use my computer as a phone. Can this be done? on older systems and prior OS systems, this could be done. How can it be done on Vista?

I have new pc with Vista, I want to use it as a phone. I have dsl internet and a modem built in not being used. I have been searching shareware for this type of software and have not had luck. I know there has to be something out there that will let me hook up a phone line to modem and use PC as a telephone. I have tried going through the modem settings, I do not see a program like the old telephony dialer, I think that is what I need, a telephony dialer program.

Or if you want something a little more professional (and expensive) try Winfax Pro. But the question is, will they work on Vista?

First you need a sound modem, then you need a software for that, if you use dial up to get to the Internet when I call you your phone will sound Busy because you are using it to be on line you have to have DSL.
Note: you said vista, vista does not run on old computer.

Go in to control panel select classic veiw and then you should be able to find phone and modem options I have highspeed so you'll have to figure it out from there.
