We haven't done anything to the yard. The landscaping was already done before we moved in. They just showed up yesterday and started ripping out trees and bushes.

Ofcourse. They own the land.

Assuming that you did not change the landscaping from grass to a rock garden, I would ask the question, "Do you want to continue renting from a man who would rip up your beautiful landscaping?"

Most owners welcome the addition of landscaping which adds value to their property. Maybe it is time to find a new place to live, if you love gardening. Most owners are begging for tenants who are willing to invest in beautiful landscaping. In my neighborhood, there is an owner who is upset because their renters are parking on the grass. Most of the front yard is now mud. Remember, landscaping is immovable property. When you leave, it stays with the property.

When it comes to landlords, you have to ask them first for anything you do to there house.Check your contract to see if they have a policy on planting your own plants. If not then i would bring this up to them, tell them that you did not see in the contract that you could not do this. Its not right for them to just rudely tear up your plants like that.Unfortunly they do own the house and can do what they want, some landlords are just asses.Maybe you can find somewhere else soon with better landlords. But now you learned to ask everytime you plan on spending money on something like that.

Yeah - if you significantly altered the outside view of the
property and there is no agreement in the lease that allows
you to make such a modification .... yup.

Usually people talk to the property owner before modifying
the property.

If you're renting then your landlord can pretty much do whatever they want. I would take a look at your lease, and see if it says anything about not planting things. Otherwise I'd contact them to see why it was removed.

Most likely. Did you get any sort of permission to do it? In writing is best, but if you had a verbal agreement and there was a witness, you're also covered.

If it does not specify in the Lease that you are allowed to have it, then, yes.
