Generally speaking it's about the same. No matter which you choose, tropical or coldwater, you will still need to maintain the tank and filter. There are of course special considerations for particularly sensitive fish, but that's another story.

Most tropical fish are easier to care for then goldfish. The exceptions are fish like Discus and some African exotics. Goldfish produce a high level of ammonia and it can pose a challange to keep this level to a minimum for healthy fish. Also you can house many more tropicals in the same space as one or 2 goldfish. Good Luck!

actually goldfish are easy to keep as long as their water condition is good and clean.. as they eat a lots and of cause they make the water dirty easily. but a good water filtration system will solve the water conditions problems and they are good pets as they recognize their owners. if u find your gold fish is sick or not as active, try add a small amounts of salts into the water, this usually helps.
tropical fishes are easy to keep provided you know what type of fishes they are.. some can grow very big while others cannot. if u keep both of them together, the bigger fish will eat up the smaller one.
and some of them needs good water condition too.. some are very aggressive and attack each other... while gold fish don't, try read up more about the type of tropical fishes u prefer before u get them, don't buy them just because they look good.. as we are responsible for their well being and their every needs.

typically goldfish are the most unknowingly neglected fish due to the fact that most believe all they need is a bowl. Gold fish are very dirty fish and naturally produce a lot of ammonia. They need a LOT of filtration this is why the gold fish in a bowl doesnt last too long. Tropical fish are MUCH easier in that the do not require as much space per fish as a gold fish does. This is a great site that lists the different species of fish and will even tell you what ones do best with which ones etc http://www.elmersaquarium.com/000tropfishcareguides.htm VERY imformative even has gold fish info

No, I think they are easier. Goldfish are messy and require more space to thrive. That is why they dont live long in small tanks. Most tropical fish have very simple needs and can live for very long periods of time if properly cared for. Just look up your specific species to make sure you know what its needs are. You should never have more than 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. But remember fish grow. So a 1 inch fish that will grow to be 5 inches needs at least 5 gallons of water to thrive.

Tropical fish is really wide scope as compared to goldfish.
Some tropical fish such as certain charachins like yellow banded moenkhausias, are rather hardy and so are gouramis like the three-spot gourami so they would require less maintenance as compared to goldfish who give out much more waste.
However, then again, other tropical fish like chocolate gouramis are way more vulnerable to infection and need lots of attention, seemingly more than the goldfish who are stringer in their immune system.
So it depends on what kinds of tropical fish you are comparing with though I would say most tropical fish are harder to keep due to their sensitivity to Ph and most other stuff (chlorine amount, sand dirt, etc...)

Depending on the fish. Gold fish are very easy to take care of . Tropical fish such as guppies, mollies, platys, swords are easy to take care of and can be in the same tank together.

they require more than goldfish. Equipment wise only a heater, where as goldfish do not need a heater.
Goldfish also can be fed many items that you eat from green beans to chicken and liver.
As far as harder, goldfish are hearty and can withstand many fluxuations in the water. They also live a lot longer than tropicals.
All fish require a certain amount of care. It is more about what you want to take care of and what you want to look at every day
