I say no. It seems Shilpa is always mixed up in some controversy. I respect India's culture but come on.. This is a bit extreme..

The laws of a country are theirs and should be respected. If someone came to America and broke the law we'd expect them to pay the consequences. It doesn't matter what we think about another country's laws because we don't live there and we don't make them. They are just as important in their country as ours are in our country. Its hypocritical to say someone should obey the laws of our country but that we shouldn't obey the laws of other countries. If its against the law and he broke it, he should pay the consequences.

I am shocked by this incident, I mean really I thought Richard Gere only liked gerbils. From the pictures of Shilpa I have seen it is probably worth jail time for Gere, she is pretty hot for a guy as creepy looking as him. Hey at least his time he did something outrageous with a human and not animal life.

Seriously thought the Indian culture is different then American culture and it is their right to seek charges if this really was such a terrible act. Indian culture is very strict and Gere should have known better then to risk insulting people.

Well from what I understand he is a frequent traveler to India, so he should know some of the laws by now. Also I read the the penalty is a fine, or 6 months in prison, or both. I'm sure if he reasons with the judge then he will only pay a fine. I think he should face it and deal with it so it doesn't result in jail time. That is what a man would do. Despite the absurdity of it.

It's just a kiss not a rape. This attitude is more common within Islamic societies, especially the extremist type exercising their interpretation of the Law of God.

The Catholics were also very good with their inquisitions during the 1500' AD until the late 1900's.

These same minorities, also are responsible and supporters of the worst human rights abuse since Hitler against women.

Apart from the Arab counties you can add Pakistan, India, Indonesia and parts of Africa are just some of the countries that oppress women in the name of religion.

If you dont like the kiss dont see it and dont talk about it dear. If you are so concerned about public indecency, let me tell u some more arenas where u can play ur gud guy image. Try doing something about men who practice all kinds of indecency with girls in our public buses, this is quite a ubiquitus happening . Any girl who has ever tavelled in a public bus will tell u. Try thinking about men who urinate along roadsides and other public places, dont u find that indecent?? And what about men scratching their private parts everywhere publicly? What about the rapes and cases of molestations that happen everyday in our country? Didnt they exist before Gere kissed Shilpa? What about the **** films and websites that are freely available to everybody since time immemorial. A large number of our youth have had enjoyed them before they pass out their colleges. So u see we jst dont need Gere to introduce indecency into our society, we do have plenty of it, & we dont lag behind anybody. The truth is , becoz our minds are always polluted (thanks to repressions and inhibitions) we see a simple gesture of affection as indecency. Gere comes from a culture where a kiss is not simply a representation of lust , as we think of it now, instead those people kiss all the things they respect and value, if u understand what i am taking about.

He violated a law in a foreign country and should face the penalties of that country.

I think the law is over the top and stupid on it's face, but it's the law non the less. Wouldn't we be influencing a "sovereign" nation if we allowed him to escape justice? He went there of his own accord, why should he be exempt from the law. What if he went with the intent of having sex with a minor? That's the responsibility when you travel to these type of countries.
