WOW - you must have touched a nerve with this question.....
EDIT: after reading some of the responses - I predict he will be seen as one of the best presidents of the 20th century in a generation or two. Most of the things the submitters are complaining about are big things to small groups of people – the enduring legacy of Reagan is already forgetting such things – ask any high school student.
Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less – Robert E Lee

Interestingly, there's a sign up list for who you think should be added to Mt Rushmore. Mr Reagan is one of the (if not the top) vote getter.
He is not the greatest president. Not by a long shot. He did good things, absolutely, but not the best.
Mt Rushmore is a testament to a point in time of American History (I personally don't know why the presidents chosen were chosen) but it would be wrong to add someone to that. Mr Reagan has multiple landmarks in his memory.

Reagan was great. Ever since then, I've been wishing we'd had a president who came anywhere close. But I don't think Mt. Rushmore is the right place for him. Build an independent statue somewhere and let him build his own following.
To respond to some of the silly garbage that your other responders apparently learn in school, Reagan did not ruin the economy with Reaganomics - he SAVED it. The economy when he came in was a shambles. By cutting red tape and taxes, he allowed the nation to recover. And only an idiot would criticize his policy toward the Soviet Union. He effectively ENDED the Cold War, which had been waging for decades under presidents who didn't have the guts to stand up to them. In doing so, he put an end to our need for massive ongoing expense, and in the end, made it possible for future presidents to balance the budget. If our current president hadn't destroyed this balance, we'd still be in good shape today. George W. Bush, however, returned to the worthless economic policies that were popular pre-Reagan, and that's why we're struggling again.

No, it would likely cause what's there to crumble. Besides, Gutzon Borglum's mastery and skill can't be replicated in today's "get it done yesterday" impatience.
And Ronnie was NOT the greatest or even great - he nearly bankrupted the country, a mess that Bill Clinton ended up cleaning up, and now a mess that GW Bush is trying to emulate.
Always wait at least 50 years before you judge a presidency. (Yes, that goes even for our current George W. Bush, whom I can only predict - but don't know - will be regarded as one of our worst.)

No, no no!!! He is not the greatest President this country ever had.
This man destroyed the air traffic controllers industry to the point we are now stuck with the few we have now. He undermined countries in the Caribbean where they got more and more poor, he started this "trickle down voodoo economics crap that has worked for the rich but it sure as hell has helped to shrink the disappearing middle class, he helped to slow down research when it came to the AIDS virus, helped support and the regime in the country our soldiers are being slaughtered in because they are in the middle of a civil war. More homeless were on the streets thanks to his economic policies. He sold arms to Iran and Iraq to fund his death squads in Nicaragua, he helped prop up the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. He invaded a small island in the Caribbean Grenada, a country that was absolutely no threat to the US. Nuff said

I disagree, sure he was good (Cold War with the Pope, Margerat Thatcher, and Gorbachev) but he has a tarnished legacy.
Think of the Iran Contra affair, arms for Iran to finance fascist death squads in Central America, the economics have been shown to be a long term failure...he presided over the savings and loan scandal that cost the US billions...
But for me FDR is the greatest ever ...
They should carve FDR up there!

While RR had a great personality, the fact of the matter is our country really struggled under his leadership. He really took the cold war to a new level, provoked the USSR into thinking we were going to reinvent our nuclear arsenal and he spent so much on Star Wars. Billions were spent on a program that produced next to nothing. Ever hear of Reaganomics? He was a good person but as president our country suffered for his recklessness.

NO.
He was very popular you are correct. But he did a lot of bad things as well. His involvement in the Iran-Contra affair probably spurred global terrorism today. His trickle down economics policy has been shown to be a failure. He did do many good things as well but to say he is THE greatest president ever is completely false.

If he's on a mountain with any politicians, it should be one with the likenesses of Jesse Ventura and Shwarzaneggar as well. He's an actor, that's the only reason he was allowed in the White House. Hopefully, we never make that mistake again at a Presidential level. The states can do what they want, just don't let another actor into the White House.

How inconsiderate to the designer. How very unthoughtful and unkind. Yeah why don't we just go scratch some changes into the constitution and maybe highlight the statue of Liberty's hair and then we can widen the grand canyon.......maybe add Rush Limbaug's picture to the Sistine Chapel?
