I have a huge headache.
You see, I am not a hardcore gamer, and I know absolutely nothing about buying a gaming console.
I want to buy the sony playstation solely for the purpose of playing final fantasy X (i know, im such a duck, playing it only like now.) and I would appreciate it if someone can educate me briefly about the things I should look out for? I just want to plug and play, the less hassle, the better.
how do I know what games are compatible with what?
how do you save games on the ps?
what do all the ntsc thingamajigs mean?
and how would i know if its compatible with the tv?
someone help me out please? your help would be much appreciated.
i attempted going to wikipedia to read up about it but it only left me more confused. which sucks. argh.
thanks in advance!

since you didn't ask a question, i'm going to have to do some guess work.
you want to know how to avoid being scammed into buying fake games/systems? is that it?
anyway - NTSC. that's a region code. i live in the USA, so the region code here, just like japan, canada, mexico, is NTSC. if it's something that's sold in USA to be used in USA by a respectable business, they will work together. Over in europe, asia, australia, south africa, they use PAL region code.
there are two cords to hook into a ps2 to get it to work, other than a controller. the power cord (no explanation available) and the a/v cord. you've seen these before as bundled cables that have two or three heads at one end, with combinations of red, yellow, and white. these are called audio [video] cords. generally, TVs have them color coded so you put them in the correct spot, but if they don't, red and white are audio, and if you've only got a white or a red (not both), it's ok to not have one plugged in. yellow is video. remember that
memory card. 8mb. generally like 15-20 US dollars for one card, and like 30 US dollars for two cards. i play a LOT of games, and haven't even filled up my first card
any more questions? you can email me.

Ok you need a PS2 "magic Gate" Memory Card. All of them should have the "magic Gate" thing even the third party ones. Just make sure it is PS2 Memory Card though. Hate when people say oh get a PS Memory Card. You go to a used game dealer and ask for a Playstation Memory card they would likely either tell you they don't have any or give you the PS 1 memory card. You would be screwed for PS2 games. Although if you got a PS1 game you would need a PS1 memory card, although that is a pointless discussion since you don't want a PS1 game. Oh and unless you plan on going online the "slimline" or Original system MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. They are the SAME THING. The "slimline" is new. They took out the expansion bay and that is where most of the slimming down was from. If it overheats then that would tell you where else they slimmed down(cooling fan). OK but to go right into your thing
Yeah you get a system and if it is new then you should get the plugs(AV Cords and Power Cord) and not sure about the controller, ask the place you buy if from if you need.
The Games that are for PS2 will have Playstation 2 written right on them. It will be right across the top. Actually all game systems have which one they are for written across the top now.
The PS2 needs a PS2 Memory Card to save to
NTSC is a coding of the game. It really doesn't mean much if you don't plan to take the game to another country without your system. In that case you would need to make sure the other system doesn't use PAL instead. Really not likely to come up.

Alright. The playstation 2 can be found at 130 new at any store. You can get t black or satin silver. I like silver. Now, these stores sell ps2's, but they are the slim ones, and they are known to overheat fast. But I would still get the slim one, it's better than the original. The good thing about it is that you can use old ps1 games and play it on there, and, the ps2 has probably the most variety of games, but the graffics aren't the best though. They are pretty good, but it would never beat the xbox. It plugs in almost any tv. You can even get it at a lower price at ebay and amazon. But, I wouldn't recommend buying used things on amazon or ebay, because I bought a ps2 once, and the seller said that it was like new, and when I got it, it stinked from smoke and it only played ps1 games. Luckily, amazon gave me my money back because that guy didn't want to and ignored my messages. I then sold it for 60 bucks. I wouldn't recommend having that mentality and going out for the purpose of getting free things, because amazon does not do that every single time. The ps2 is a good buy, but I also recommend the 360. It's the best system ever. But since you're not that much of a gamer, the ps2 is perfect for you. Here are some places to buy it at....
Wal Mart
Target
Sears
Toys R Us
Circuit City
Best Buy
Gamestop
EB Games
Funcoland
Game Crazy
Pawn shops
Flea markets
Ebay
Amazon
Good luck!

Assuming you have a TV made in the last 15 years, you'll have the Yellow/Red/White inputs to use the PS2 out of the box.
Go to any store and buy the "Slimline PS2". The Ps2 games will be nearby, and they are clearly labeled as such.
NTSC is the videostandard used in North America and Japan. If you are located elsewhere (europe) you should get a PAL version, but that is pretty much not an issue as stores in those areas only sell compatible systems for the most part.
It'll come with a controller, and you need to buy a Memory Card... (they should be located close by) If you are just playing Final Fantasy 1 card should do you just fine.
The game should be 20 bucks...
have fun.

Hi. I'm a hardcore gamer, so yeah. You can get a PS2, and there is almost no hassle. To play A PS game, you need to put the disk in the drive. To save, you need a PS memory card.
Also, you need to plug in the cords (it takes awhile to make them reach the outlet for me), but that shouldn't be to hard. It is always TV Compatible.
There are Red, Yellow, and White cords to plug in the front (or back) of the TV. Some TV's have colored holes to help you find which one goes where. Others just have 2 or 3 holes and they are labeled. I think white and red are for the sound and yellow is for the video feed. You have to try it, and it gets frustrating after awhile.

if u havent got the yello, white and red inputs on ur tv then u need an rf converter that converts the ps2's outputs into the rf(the round plug wat tv aerials use) so u can just scan for the new channel and play.
dont worry about compatibility...just make sure that if ur in the UK then the games must hav PAL on it..if ur in the US it must have NTSC on the cover/disc.
and of course make sure its a ps2 game.
ps2 will work with the oldest tv u can find.
