My betta has got some small rips at the end of his fins. I think he got tangled in a small silk plant I did notice one day he was tangled in it before and probably should have remove it then, there is only silk plants and smooth river rocks in with him.I have removed the offending plant and he is in a 5 gallon tank with heater and filter.I am just wondering if it will take along time for his fins to heal and is there anything I should watch for while they do.

It shouldn't take more than a month or so for some very small rips to heal. Obviously the longer the rip, the longer the healing time. Watch for strong currents in the tank that could cause the rips to worsen, watch for fungus and fin rot setting in at the damaged areas. Otherwise, just keep the tank warm, the water very clean and keep him well fed on a balanced diet and nature will do the rest for you.

Ammonia spikes can also cause splitting in fins on bettas, even small spikes so keep a careful eye on the ammonia levels in the tank.

MM pretty much has it. I have the suggestion that if you want the fins to heal faster or if you suspect fin rot or fungus is setting in I would use Metafix. I have used this with bettas and had great results. Good Luck!
