Since 1600 bc: Pythagoras, Euclid, Newton, Galileo, Einstein
But that doesn't even scratch the surface of the great minds.
Hawking, Copernicus, Da Vinci, Chandrasekhar, Kepler, Benjamin Franklin, and many, many more round out this list. And many of these were western thinkers and scientists. We can't forget about the asian cultures, and more importantly the Middle-Eastern Islamic culture during the Dark Ages of the West.

I would have to say Nikola Tesla first.. without him we would have no electricity. The other 4 would have to be Maxwell, Newton, Einstein and Marconi...also Banting and Salter.
