I have a 1997 Chevy Lumina car with a 3.1. I recently changed the power steering pump in it. But it leaks fluid just about as fast as I can put it in. I dont know if it is one of the lines or the rack and pinoin. I dont know where to look first. Any Idea's?

was there leakage befor you replaced the pump?
if the rubber lines were old, they may have torn in the process of removal. Try two new hose assemblies and work from there.

You simply have to fill the system again and inspect first with the motor not running to see if it is obvious right away. If you cannot determine where the leak is coming from you will have to start the motor and have someone turn the wheels while you look. If it is running out as fast as you are putting it in it should be easy to see where. Don't run the pump dry as this will damage the pump's internals. These cars were prone to blow the pressure hose down to the rack and they also had a ton of problems with leaking racks which both can really go through the fluid. One area that is not noticed very often but caused me grief was a power steering cooler that is located inside the sub-frame at the RR of it. To repair this we used to remove it and toss it away. We would then replace the return hoses into one and secure it to something to keep things tight. Just make sure what is leaking as this stuff is all very expensive. Good luck.

Look at the slave cylinder seal , the hydraulic cylinder attached to the steering sector. The seal is probably blown out. As it tries to buid pressure, it blows Power steering fluid past the seal. Then check the hoses for a bad crimip or a crack. The smaller hose is the high pressure side, the larger is the return. Hope this helps.-

1. Raise the vehicle & place on jack stands

2. Spray the engine with degreaser fluid. Let stand for 20 minutes. Hose off & allow to dry.

3. Fill reservoir

4. Star engine

5. Have someone sit in the driver's seat & turn the wheel all the way to the left & right

6. Crawl under vehicle & check for leaks

Check your power steering cooler. They, I believe, are under the passenger side of the vehicle on this model. It basically looks like a brake line that is bent up, and it is very common for them to rot out. If it is the lines leaking, it is a TERRIBLE job to repair, from an access to the lines point of view.

i own a shop and look and see where the fluid is coming from its from the pump then you need another pump or if its from the rack and pinion ,,then you,ll need to replace it.since i cant see it you,ll have to provide the information of where its leaking from before i could tell you how to fix it,if i could see it i could tell you,but its impossible, check it out real good ,it may just be a line with a bad o-ring o it ,good luck with it hope this helps.

wipe it all down and then put some in slowly and watch for where it leaks..if all else fails go to your closet store to have them look for you but doing it yourself saves you alot of money
