America is a very status-oriented society. Keeping up with the Jones has become a social obligation. Capitalism sets the morality of the people. Succeeding is not simply a personal goal anymore, it is a moral value. Do we not speak of how much a person is worth?
Given the circumstances, and given that most people will inevitably fall in the median, i.e. the average, it is not surprising that we always seem to be running after something.

The media. They have everyone convinced that they need things bigger, better and more expensive. They portray an average lifestyle as not being good enough any more. The question is, though, who the hell are we trying to impress?
