Hello There!
Contact Network Solutions at www.networksolutions.com, they are one of the few Domain Name assignment companies and they can probably help you.
Or you can do a 'whois' search for your domain name www.(name).(3 letter extension) and see the results of just which organization secured the name for you and what company is hosting your web site. Then you can contact BOTH the company that assigned you your domain name and the company that is hosting your web site. You can call them and explain the situation.
You will have to fax them proof that you are the lawfull owner/administrator of the site now, and they will give you all the information you need to be able to take control of the web site.
This is NOT a horrible process to go through, just a bit of paperwork. I had to do it last year. But do it soon, because if you let your domain name account expire, your domain name will be available to ANYONE. . .including competitors and people disgruntled with your organization.
WHOIS can be located at
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp
And it will provide you with some base information to get the ball rolling. Ultimately, you need to change the admin and possibly the owner.
Many webmasters have a habit of registering the domain name in their name, rather than the clients. Don't worry, it will all be worked out. It does take a few days, but by then you most likely will have a new webmaster and can just hand over all the necessary information that you have received, like the passwords for changes, to the new web master.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. What you should do now is find someone that is willing to help you with the site, and possibly teach you how to run the site.
The information about the website still should be on the computer he used. Perhaps you could talk to his family, and retrieve the information from it?

what do you mean, your webmaster died, and because of it all of the information is gone? sounds fishy. why would your website be gone just because he died? maybe you should explain more.
