The patent process isn't fast and it isn't cheap. First, you'll need a patent attorney. A search is done to make sure that nobody has has made your product, done your process, idea, etc. Once it is determined that this is something new, you will get a patent pending. The process takes about a year (or more) and costs a few thousand dollars.

It's fairly involved the gov has a website about it..........
patent.gov ought to find it....
