They create a purpose in their head for what they are doing is good in their own terms and doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks. And they also accept the fact that in the end all this will catch up to them and could lead them to their grave. Most of these people are deeply emotionaly troubled, they don't have any friends to release the heat or share their pain thus their pain builds up and becomes a plan.

It has been said that "all who sin are slaves" When you reach for a wrong thing out of emotional pride, the experience becomes a part or your being and it then becomes a driving force in you. When presented with a similar experience again, the corrupt nature awakens and cries out for satisfaction. Unless you have the truth to break the spell, you are driven to repeat the past to relieve and gratify the same old desires. They are stronger than your common sense that says you shouldn't. Left to its own devices, the drive eventually becomes an addiction and a self destructive behavior.

It depends on the person and the "harmful" thing they are doing. Greed, selfishness, depression, addiction, etc. etc. There are MANY reasons that someone might do this. You need to be more specific about what you mean.

many reasons that differ on a case by case basis. I'm guessing that its a matter of perspective whether or not its actually harmful, once again, depends on the situation.

A lot of people are just out for #1 (themselves). As long as it benefits them, that's all that matters. Just remember not every body's like this. I hope you weren't the one to get the bad end of the deal. :) keep smiling!

Rationalisation. They usually rationalise it in such a way that it appears " not so wrong" to them. Few people would do something if they TRULY believe it is wrong. They usually manage to rationalise it somehow e.g. they (the victims) deserve it, or it is my due etc.

its human nature to be evil (mean cruel - whatever you want to call it). its harder to be nice all the time and sometimes when you have a person with an unbalanced state of mind, they lean towards what is easiest for them to deal with, which would be the 'evil' side.

they talk themselves into believing that it's ok, even though they know it's wrong and it would hurt someone else or themselves. it starts small then grows worst unless the person realizes that their doing, faces their fears and moves on.
