I recently bought a CD that was developed by a group of MD's to induce a state of deep relaxtion. (it works!). According to the Dr.s, the human mind has a 'tag along' function, this means it cannot HELP but be influenced by music. The brain tends to set up patterns that are consistent with the music it senses.
Scientist also are suggesting that Motzart's music is so beautiful because it actually mimics the way our mind functions (and is excellent for kids to listen to).
I don't know if we'll every understand why, but music is part of culture and human beings, being social anaimals, cannot function without the culture that defines their society.
Excellent Question, wish I knew the answer.

A human being has three parts: body, soul, and spirit. Music also has three parts that corresponds to the three parts of a human being.
Rhythm-The rhythm corresponds to the body. that's why certain songs make you tap your feet, while others make you swing around, and still others want to make you slow dance; its just different rhythms.
Melody-The melody corresponds to your spirit. Some songs lift your spirit and make you happy while others make can make you cry.
Harmony-The harmony affects your soul. Your soul is: mind, will and emotions. That's why some music can get you pumped while working out- it strengthens your will; and yet the music you play for your date during a romantic evening caters to you emotions.
Keep in mind that the beet or rhythm can affect both the rhythm and the harmony in any particular song. that's why a song with a sad melody is usually slow and your work out music is hard-driving. All parts of music must work together to get the desired affect. Also, musicians use "dynamics"-(fading, growing softer or louder, tremolo, ect..) and vocalist use voice influctions and/or dynamics to give the music the desired feel.
It goes much more in depth than this, but this gives you the general idea.

Well for me music helps me track certain eras of my life, it helps me with remembering where I have been and what was going on at that particular time. Sometimes I may hear a song on the radio, or listen to an old CD or tape and think of a year and say " Oh I remember 1996, that is when........" its like different music is the soundtrack to our lives at particular moments.

Music has rythm... Rythm has vibrations or vibes and it is the movement of these vibes that play in our ears along with the sense of hearing that makes us like it or not like it.. If we like it we feel good ------ Mind Body connection

It really does make us feel good, but I don't know how to explain it!
Maybe it is one of those things that don't need explanation at all, you just enjoy it without asking why!

It soothes our soul. It does the same thing to our psyche that petting does to a cat and it causes us to purr.
