I doubt science has a good answer to that question yet. Little is known about the lifecycle of many of those very deep sea animals. We are learning though.

First of all the viper fish is not a single species, but rather there are many different species that are commonly referred to as viper fish. Viper fish generally live in the "twilight" area of the ocean, at depths of 500-2,000 feet. They are slender, and taper from a large head to a small tail. They have huge jaws, with very large fangs. Indeed, the teeth are so large that the fish cannot close its mouth all the way. The mouth is very deep, and can open wide enough to catch very large prey. You don't have to worry too much about being eaten by a vicious viper fish - not only are they found only in deep water, but the different species range in size from a few inches to just under a foot.

Due to the harshness of the area they live, typically Viper fish live no longer than around 8 years.
