I personally use then for special symbols like french é ç è
or when you get a key not working example 'u' you just press Alt+117 from the numpad.

ASCII code was developed to have a set of standards for characters. Computers know only 1s and 0s and software is written so that particular combinations can be seen as letters. Before ASCII a definitive standard had yet to be written...so something like 000100101 could be a B on one system and a C on another. That's a big difference if you're sending computer A a text file from computer B.
