96 chry sebring convert. jx 2.5l, 155k, new eng, new trans
situation has happened 4 times in 6months, fuel tank has had 1/2 tank or more. driving along at any speed. car becomes "sluggish" increasing accelerator does not result in acceleration. car slows, depressing accel. does nothing, response is flat. eventually car comes to a stop. Engine still runs and now service engine soon light comes on. attempts to accelerate engine dont work. engine quits. will almost start, or does start but will only idle. depressing accel. causes stall. Let car sit for 15 min to overnight and starts up and is "normal" (accelerates, drives, idles etc.). I had the fuel filter changed the first time it happened. The same time and every time there after I have disconnected the fuel line at its entery to eng. compartment and collected fuel to visually look for water, dirt etc. abundent fuel when engine is cranked, fuel is free of water/dirt. Ideas?

Thanks for the replies. Gearnofear, do you mean that I can determine the code by following the key "on off" sequence and then counting the flashes, and I don't need a code reader to determine the code? I understand that I will need someone to interpret the code once I have it, though. thanks.

Chrysler cars and trucks are known for doing this after 150k miles. I have a 95 Ram that developed the same problem and I was racking my brain as well as putting a strain on my wallet. I replaced the fuel filter, mass air flow sensor and the oxygen sensors. As I found out it was 2 things. 1 was the mass air flow sensor which I had already replaced. The 2nd one was not that obvious and it was the Catalytic converter. After that many miles it needs to be replaced. the converters of today are made of recycled metals and they are not as porous as they were back in the 70's and 80's. So they tend to clog or stop up restricting the flow of exhaust fumes.

If you can provide the trouble code that would help. To get the code you will need to turn the key on,off,on,off,on. The check engine light will not start to flash. all codes are in sets of 2. So for example you have : blink.blink..blink.blink.blink.....Blink.Blink...blink.blink.Blink......: This would be code 23. there is a longer pause inbetween flashes. once you have the codes go to the site I have listed and get the description of the problem. We can help you out more form there. If for some reason the code will not display take the car to an Autozone and have them retreive the codes for you. They should also be able to assist you with the problem. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need to T in a fuel pressure gage. That way you can see what the pressure is doing. Fuel pump's pick up screen might have junk on it or the pump gets hot and starts slowing down. The new 10/15% ethanol fuel is killing off the older fuel injectors and fuel pumps.

First get the car scanned with an OBDII scanner, you will get the codes and tell you what you need to fix, the I would give the car a good tuneup. Oil and filter, platinum spark plugs, new spark plug wires, air filter and fuel filter.

I have a 71 Chrysler, this problem sounds like a blocked fuel line.

A classic symptom of a plugged catalytic converter...have the shop put a pressure gage upstream of it...it will show too much back pressure.

It wouldn't hurt to check for a restricted exhaust, such as something odd with the catalytic converter.
