I am getting a lot of mail for several previous tenants. I don't have any forwarding addresses and some of the mail looks pretty important.

writing on envelope and sending back does not work

You just mark each of them NOT AT THIS ADDRESS, and throw them back in the post office box (where you would mail a letter). This redirects the mail to the dead mail office of the post office, where they would either send it to the re-direct address that the recipient registered with them, or return it to sender.

Return to sender for the first 3 months, most previous occupants should have had enough time to either set up a mail divert or change their address. After that try tracking them down using electoral role or get in touch with your solicitor (if you bought a house). Your solicitor should be able to contact the seller's solicitor and from them get the seller's new address.

Failing that, just chuck the mail away. If the previous people can't be bothered / are too stupid to sort their affairs out then that's their problem!

The previous owner of our house died over 3 years ago and he still gets mail and at least 1 xmas card every year. I write unknown or deceased and return to sender but it takes some companies a long time to update their mailing lists. I contacted the Post Office and they said they are obligated to deliver it to the address stated and I cant do anything else other than put return to sender.

Write "Not at this address - return to sender" on the envelope. The post office will send it back to the sender who will hopefully update their records. If you have any of these tenants' contact information, contact them and ask them to file a forwarding address at the post office so that you don't keep receiving their mail. They may not be using it to dodge debt collection (although it's possible). As someone else pointed out, it's illegal for you to open those letters if they are not addressed to you. If the person whom the mail is addressed to finds out, they can have you sent to jail for doing it. Simply return the letters to the sender, unopened.

Write "Moved, no forwarding address" on each envelope and put them back in the mail. If you have a regular mail carrier, that you can catch, talk to them for further assistance or advice.

When I first moved I just wrote "wrong address, return to sender" and left them all on the box for the mail lady to pick up again. After some time of this alot of it stopped.

Just write 'Not Known at This Address' or 'No Longer at This Address',and pop it in a letter box. Although if anything looks as if it is from a debt collection agency or similar you may want make sure the bailiffs don't turn up on your doorstep.

If you're in UK you can go to http://www.royalmail.com and report the problem to them.

Buy yourself a "not at this address" rubber stamp....

Bank accounts/share dealings/pensions/saving cannot by law stop sending out statements & such. You can try a bit of detective work such as electoral roll for previous tenants, and try sending it to their 'new' address; That's about it.
