Even the decent crappy telescopes start at $150 usually. You didn't say where you are. If I knew where you were I might be able to recommend places to look.

You first need to assess your goals for the telescope. For the $100-$200 range Meade has some scopes that will open the universe to you. You will be able to the planets, Moon, some deep sky objects (nebulae, clusters, galaxies).
Do this route until you decide what you want to "specialize" in then save up and buy a scope that will suit your needs and last a lifetime.
My very first scope was a Tasco 60mm refractor with a single variable power eyepiece. It opened up the universe and only cost $99. I then went to an RV6 Dynascope (Criterion Corporation). It was a 6" reflector scope for $199. (OK scope price were cheap 40 years ago)
I now use a Celestron 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain scope for everything. It was the scope I had to dream about for a long time, until I could afford to buy it at $1,995.
So start small and work up. This hobby can last a lifetime. And with the proper filters you can observe the sun. I use my Celestar 8 to look at the sun and take photos of solar eclipses.

I'd suggest telescope.com. They have a wide variety of scopes and explain the pluses and minuses of each. Some questions you're going to need to answer yourself...

Will you take pictures?
What amount are you willing to spend?
How portable do you need this telescope to be?

good luck

Your first telescope should really be a good pair of binoculars.
