The influence MTV continues to have hasn't really changed *that* much, IMO. Since its inception, & success, it's been no longer an *option* to make a video for exposure, it's become a *necessity*....sort of.

The one sigificant difference w/ today is that now we've got the Internet. Most bands today have websites that fans (& potential fans) can just point & click to to learn about & hear music. Youtube is another outlet. & that's free.

MTV still has a large (& clueless) viewership, but it's 'power' has def' been diminished.

There was a time that the videos in the 80s had meant something. There was actually music and music videos! Now, it is just garbage, just catering to an audience now is what they are doing. Sex and crap. Things you don't want your your young teenager to act like, nor look like. So in the 80s, oh it was very influential. Now, it is influential as well, but it is garbage. Parents block it out of the TV more than before. I will say that MTV in the 80s had some class and was creative.

Do you mean music or music industry?

I doubt if it had any influence on the music. It had MAJOR influence on the money flow ie popularization of specific music and groups.

These days MTV is Jackass and Pimp my wife.
