December 21, 2012 is the pivotal point of the 12th baktun on the Mayan "Long Count" calendar (ie: the end of the current cycle), which many interpret to mean the "end of the world", but based on the culture and context, it's more likely that it just suggests a major change in the world order. Interestingly, according to the same calendar, the cycle started at just about the same time that the Kingdoms of Egypt were united (maybe exactly - no exact date for it), thus ushering the direct evolution to modern Western-dominated culture as we know it.

The Inca and Aztec also had the same date (well, a few days off in the case of the Inca) on their calendars for the end of this cycles (though they debatably were all sourced from the same place).

But hark! Nostradamus also predicted a major world change right around then, the Judeo-Christian 11:11 prophecy, depending on many calculations, matures around then (and interestingly the world was supposedly created in the sign Leo, hence the Egyptian Sphynx, which also ties into the whole cycle thing...)... and in Fatima the Blessed Mother essentially warned the kids that they'd be the last generation (2 died shortly after, and they were informed they would, and the other just died in 2005... interestingly 7 years before 2012, which goes back to revelations...)

I'm not religious. At all. So I take all the religious aspects with a grain of salt. However, it's very interestingly that so many MAJOR "end times" prophecies place the end/major change at exactly the same time. Yes, the end of the world has been predicted almost every year since the dawn of time, but most have been unsubstantiated lunatics ranting. Never before have the very core of many advanced ancient cultures, as well as actual Christian prophecy itself, and such famous prophets as Nostradamus ALL tied in together. Most other end times predictions have come from unfounded claims made shortly before... but these are all prophecies that have been around for a VERY long time, and are major ones at that (made, for the most part, by respected sources who earned that respect for things other than their prophecies).

The end of the world is timed(or believed) differently in different religions.
In Judaism, the end of days will occur at or before the year 2240

For Christians, the End was first fixed at 202, but when the date passed, the date was changed to AD 500. later on, there were many failed predictions.Catholic Church now is very careful not giving out timing of End times.

2012 you referred to is Maya's end of time in Maya's calendar, IT IS SAID that the world be completing its first great cycle of approximately 5,200 years on the 21 December, 2012.

But there is no substantial evidence that ancient Maya man had this in mind.
