It's debatable. You would think that turning it off and waiting until it becomes uncomforable would save you on fuel however what your doing is making the Compressor work as hard as it did the first time to cool it back down again. Where as once it gets it cool it just has to maintain the tempeture, However the AC clutch is also enguaging and disenguaging all the time to compress the gas to cool the air. I have found I get better mileage with my 1998 Windstar if I leave it running as aposed to turning it on and off all the time where as I get better mileage on the 2005 malibu if I turn it off and then on again as apossed to running it all the time. Run some numbers and see what you get. in other words track you mileage and try both.

I'm not so sure, your first approach would work that good. Running the ac should be a good enough option. Most cars in India dont provide lot of fuel efficiency when ac is turned off. What type of car do u use ?
From my personal experience , my car gives about an average of 12kmpl with ac turned off, n about 10-11 with ac turned on. So I would advice keeping ac - low for most of the time while you are driving. There is no point in switchin on n switchin off ac as it would create a lot of discomfort. So u either switch it off completely n keep windows open for proper ventilation or keep the ac running.

If your AC has temperature control set it to middle level or moderate level, Keep the fan in 1st position and allow it to run with its controls regulating ON-OFF operations. By doing what you propose, you may not save on mileage for reasons explained by some of the previous answers.

on the question of which consumes extra gasoline, A/C load on engine or homestead windows down - to reduce gasoline prices concerning cooling do this: once you first get right into a warm vehicle, roll the homestead windows all the way down to allow the nice and cozy air get away. do not run A/C on "max" or "recirc" immediately away, only use time-honored A/C to tug in sparkling air in the starting up. After a couple of minutes roll up the homestead windows and run A/C. Take it from an aeronautical engineer, wind resistance will enhance exponentially with velocity, so until eventually you're putt-putting around the former human beings's nursing homestead, roll those homestead windows up! exceptionally sensible if you're operating on fumes praying you're making it to the subsequent gasoline station. Even having side-view mirrors and windshield wipers on your vehicle cost many gallons of gasoline each 12 months, yet you want those.

Yes, that is what I do, run the compressor until the car is comfortable, then turn the compressor off.... when it gets a little hot turn it back on again.

The less that the compressor is running the better the economy. So if you shut it off, the longer it is off, the better the mileage.
