People have already answered this, but partly to answer what the other answerer asked, he wondered why they sing it because he thought they were homosexual and Jesus Christ gave His apostles specific injunctions against homosexual behavior. It would be wrong for a group that was honoring and obeying Christ to tolerate, approve or ignore homosexual actions.
However, what happened in many large cities where there were local YMCA branches which provided low cost lodging and gym facilities to members and their guests, homosexuals deliberately and selfishly infiltrated the buildings, using them without authorization as meeting places and places for having their illicit substitute for sex.
Please understand, this happened without the permission or approval of the YMCA or the Christian community. When homosexual were barred from entering one place, they simply moved to another place and continued to degrade themselves and those they deceived into believing that they were born ‘that way’ with homosexual actions.
Because the vast majority of Christians refrain from using violence against homosexuals, and try to rely on persuasion instead, it has been difficult to help them stop degrading themselves. Since some homosexuals entered the mental health field and removed homosexuality from the recognized symptoms of emotional problems, this also removed a tool with which these unfortunates could be helped. Finally, since some homosexuals have gained political power, they are trying to eliminate all disagreement with their self-destructive behavior, falsely and pejoratively labeling any such disagreement as ‘hate’.
It is exactly the same technique use by those who are now infiltrating Western civilization and recruiting for terrorist groups. The means are the same. The ends are no more legitimate.
Sadly, the Village People were not recognized in time for what they were.
Their group had three goals:
1) push for more acceptance of homosexual acts,
2) mock those who would have tried to help them (the Christians), whose institutions they subverted and hijacked (the YMCA), and
3) subjugate beauty (music) in the service of selfishness and ugliness.
