yes, i did change my first name.
i grew up with a name i hated and was moving from NYC to the west coast. while on the airplane the man next to me and i started talking about names and the importance of liking the name by which you are called. he had changed his first name and i admitted that i had wanted to change mine also. he pointed out that with my move, the timing was perfect, so i asked him 'what' he thought i looked like. he immediately spit out a name and it was THE name that i had always wished i had.
i got off the plane as a new and different person. it felt so natural and i have never once regretted it.
i wish i knew how to contact that man who helped rename me on that day. he did me a great service.

Not for "fun", but I suppose if some madman was trying to follow me around or something (no idea why he would do that!), then yes, I would do what was needed to keep my identity a secret. hehe
