I have been trying to finish "The Pilgrimage" for months now. I have no doubt that the message is profound and will bring me enlightenment in many ways, but I find Coelho's style very boring and can't bring myself to read more than a couple of chapters a day. I have finished two other novels (a Murakami and Amy Tan) in between reading this book which I find more interesting. What do you think?

I would recommend reading one of his other books - The Alchemist and The Devil & Miss Prym are the best ones.

I am a fan of Paolo Coelho and love his works, but I also found 'The Pilgrimage' to be a bit slow & boring

I read ALOT of books and when The Alchemist was highly recommended to me by someone I know who worked in a book store (who had given me good recommendations before) I eagerly bought it. Then I struggled to finish the damn thing and couldnt figure out why the hell anyone would recommend this. I can't even remember what the overall message was but it seemed like philosophy for kindergartners or the world's most boring quest for self discovery or something. Proof that just because a book is trendy doesn't mean it's worht reading. Hell, Hitler's Main Kampf was a bestseller because it was popular at the time to say that you owned a copy. However, few people actually read it and it was in fact a poorly organized and poorly written book with few redeeming qualities.

I enjoyed "Veronika Decides to Die", but it's definitely not my favorite Coelho. I've read plenty of other books that are far more morose than that. What I find depressing is Moon's remark that it isn't possible to truly live in the moment. It is and I have.

i'm sorry i have to disagree with you. I actually did enjoy his books, 'The Alchemist' and 'The Devil and Miss Prym'. I like the way he writes, it's different from other people's. and u know what? i'm 14......
his books are very enlightening and makes you think or look at something in a different way.
well different people have different tastes i guess. anyway, if you don't enjoy his books why not try something else?

I've read the Alchemist. Yes, the message is profound, but his style is too simple for my taste.

it's certainly not 'easy reading' - don't like all his books, but some are interesting (eventually)
