First and foremost, It's not illegal to use someone else's wireless network. If they don't have it encrypted and secured, then it's ok. . If they do have it encrypted and you hack their network and steal their password, then yes, it is illegal. . . It's their own fault for not having their network secured.

Yes it's bad.
ILLEGAL :)
In Singapore, using another person's Wi-Fi network is illegal under the Computer Misuse Act. A 17 year old has been arrested for simply tapping into his neighbor's wireless Internet connection and faces up to 3 years' imprisonment and a fine.

It's being treated much like tresspassing these days. Most of the cases you hear about are overseas (Singapore, UK, etc), but there are some US cases where repeat offenders were arrested and fined.
The legality of it would depend on exactly where you live, but at bare minimum, I'd recommend caution. Even if it's not illegal where you are, open networks (especially high-traffic areas like airports) are sometimes traps set out by hackers looking to break into your system.

This is illegal by international agreement now. It carries very heavy prison sentences. Also if you use an unencrypted connection everything you send, including user names and passwords can be read by a sniffer programme. I know of one case where police monitoring an open connection made 5 arrests, all were convicted and either fined or imprisoned.

it's illegal in some parts of the world...
from a technical point of view, i'd have to say it's bad...
because you're eating up bandwith. this in effect, could slow down data traffic.
when you're paying for high speed internet that it's slowed down because other people are hacking into your wireless network, then that's bad...

even with a firewall on your comp, anyone would be able to track what you have sent and received over the internet. anything unencrypted they would be able to read. this is extremely simple to do.
