I have been told my ex-husband's funeral was on 29th March and I was left a substantial amount in his will. A man phoned my house number on 30th March. while I was out, to say I had 8 weeks to claim but left no name or number to contact.

As the previous answer said, one way would be to ask his family if you are able to do so. Do you have any children by him? If so,. do they know. Otherwise, you do have big problems. Did you buy a house together? If so, you could try the solicitors who acted then. Another line of inquiry would be through the firm who acted for you in your divorce. Ask them who acted for your ex-husband and then approach that firm. (Most people, in my experience tend to stay with one firm.) If you both lived in a small town with few solicitors firms you could ring round them all. I know that's not practicable in large towns and cities. If none of these lines of inquiry work, then I think you would have to speak to your own solicitor and ask them to take steps in order that you can be notified when probate is granted.

If this information is correct, then the solicitor will write to you. Solicitors never do anything without a written record. If he telephones, perhaps to check up on your address, and is not satisfied that you have received the message, then he will try again. Besides, if under the will you are left a substantial sum of money, it is up to the executors to make sure that you are traced and that the money is paid over to you, not for you to jump to it! Are there any relatives of your ex-husband whom you could approach to see what is going on? Alternatively, you could try writing to your ex-husbands address, addressing the letter to the executors of the estate of your ex-husband, so that whoever is dealing with the estate will be apprised of what is happening.
