This is a good question.
The people who already know that the bill will be vetoed can then say..."we tried" and let them off the hook.
Its a dog and pony show at best.
When the election was held last November and the Democrats took control of Congress..they made a lot of speeches that now they have to account for to the voters.
Thus they are shooting their best shot but its all smoke and mirrors.
Like Bush knows he hold the Veto power..so he will continue his agenda as the silent majority has spoken in 2002 and 2004...why did not all the people who could have voted Bush out of office bother to vote? only a third of the eligible voters bother to vote and that is in a Presidential election. So if you did not vote ..then you should not complain and if you did vote..thank a vet..

This is to make a political statement, the Democrats are
desperate to show that they represent the will of the majority
of the people in the USA, and they committed themselves to
a political course and made campaign promises.
To do nothing and blindly follow the Presidents agenda would
be the stupidest thing to do.
Any bill they push that contradicts the governments standpoint is likely to be vetoed anyway, as there seems to be no common ground.
Bush can only fervently hope the situation in Iraq improves
in the coming year because otherwise he'll be blamed for
one of the greatest disasters in US military history.
Not to mention taking the blame for the dead young soldiers.
The Dems are quite convinced that he can't fix this and that
he will drag the GOP down with him into the abbyss.
They are smelling a landslide if they can keep cornering the
President, because eventually Republican Presidential
Candidates will have to distance themselves from the current
President to even have the slightest chance of winning the
upcoming election. This will throw the Republican Party into
great disarray and the infighting and bitter arguments amongst the different GOP bloodgroups will be watched
with great amusement by the Democrats.
Don't worry about the troops though, they will eventually be
funded because the Democrats will in the end give in some-
how cause they don't want to look unpatriotic, but they'll do so
with a big smile on their face.
President Bush has manouvered himself into a no win situation, and they love to see him dangle helplessly.

the senate is trying to show the American people that if he really cared about the troops he would sign the bill. No matter what your stand on politics is anyone can clearly see that this is a damned if hes does sign it damned if he does not sign it, meaning if he does give in and does sign it he looks like he's giving in to the senate and if he does not sign the bill then it looks like he really doesnt support the troops. and if he does veto the senate will only need 16 votes to override the presidents veto. so its really only a matter of time before one of the two happens, the democrats are playing hard ball and its a nice change.

Oooh, that's actually a really good question.
One of the more important reasons:
to show the people what he is about.
Say, the senate wants to push a bill about illegal immigration. Say the bill entails that illegal immigrants should not get amnesty (pardon for being her illegally), and instead of passing the bill, he vetoes it.
This in turn shows the people where the President is on this issue. He can give all the speeches he wants, but his true colors come out when it comes to bills.
Things like this also serve to like bring up in the future. If someone is running against him or trying to impeach him, they could bring it up again, for example:
"Hey remember last year he didn't want to pass that illegal immigration bill...well I promise to do something about the surplus of illegal..."
It's basically a rouse, haha.
Understand?

come on did you see how ridiculous that bill was? It was so full of pork for other things that had nothing to do with funding the troops. It was a political ploy a joke. Wonder what would have happened if we had cut and run after pearl harbor or when England needed our help? Half the country would be eating sushi and drinking saki while the other half would be having a bowl of sourkraught and a mug of ale. But that would just be the leaders the rest would be either dead or being their slaves eating grub worms and drinking sewer water...geez folks hope we wake up as a country and defeat this evil that uses terror to kill all that don't believe as they do. If we don't and the libs get their way then we will only have ourselves to blame.

Because george is dumb enough to actually veto it. It will avail him nothing. Just micro changes will be made each time until the clock actually runs out and george looks like a fool for vetoing the bill over and over again. Little georgie isn't going to get what he wants this time. He has ordered more troops over there but he isn't going to get more money to support them. This means it's purely his fault for sending additional troops without the funds to do so! The budget is already set he's asking for more money on top of what was already budgeted. As dirty Harry once said a man has to know his own limits!

The Senate will take its chance to pass the law and pressure the President to sign it. If the President do not sign it, it will become a law unless vetoed.

Mostly to make a point and get credit for the 2008 election. Frankly, the Democrats gain more if Bush does veto the bill. They get to blame Bush for opposing the legislation and they don't have to worry about any consequences of their Iraq plan.

They're thinking that public pressure will provide them with the votes they need to over-ride the veto. If it doesn't, then they can blame Bush for all the deaths that happen in the next year going into the Nov 2008 elections.

Why do the current politicians do anything? To get power and money for themselves and their cronies. This time it's payback for the anti-war campaign donaitons that changed the makeup of congress, in hopes for more money next time around, but it's been like this for years and doesn't seem to change when different parties take power. The only real solution is to take away most of the government's power and money.
