Dear Fighting,
That seems to be the knock on Dirk. i mean look what happened last year when Dallas was up 2-0 in the Finals? Dirk definitely is a good player and his team's style of play helps him. But that's the only thing that keeps him from being considered a great player!
Even if they give the MVP to Dirk this year, i can guarantee at least 10 other players that you'd rather have the ball in their hands with the game on the line.

The problem with Dirk the MVP is that he got chosen for MVP.
And we as fans can't "rationally" complain about that because there is no specific guidelines on how to pick the MVP.
I, myself, am a Kobe fan, so my comments might seem biased. But wow, Nash is the only one that I would choose to get picked over Kobe.
Let's analyze the different possible "qualifications" for MVP.
1) Stats: Please don't insult Nash or Kobe by saying Dirk has better stats. "Dirk has more rebounds!" Well, he also has about 6 inches on them.
2) Important to their team. Without Kobe, Lakers would be a lottery team. Without Nash, the Suns would be close to the Warriors, a bunch of athletic dunkers. Dirk does nothing for the Mavs except score and draw double teams, but Kobe and Nash both do that AND MORE!
3) Team record. Agreed, Mavs have the best record, but they didn't beat Phoenix by that much. Kobe's Lakers get owned in this category, and if the sportswriter and broadcasters openly say that "Team record is how we determine MVP," then fine, I'll shut my mouth. But if this is only a small factor, Kobe beats Dirk, and if it's a big factor(but not 100% factor), then Nash beats Dirk.
4) MVP of the league: Best player in the league. Can anyone name anyone that is a better player than Kobe right now?in the entire world??? I'm sure alot of you can throw out names off the top of your head right now; names like :nash, lebron, tmac, wade. But I don't see anyone that can unbiasedly stand up and say Dirk is a better player than Kobe. It's just not true.
Dirk has improved over the last couple years. Dirk is the undisputed leader of the best team in the NBA right now. But he is not MVP! Unless those 2 qualities are the ones to determine who MVP is. Kobe beats Dirk in every other category, and so does Nash. and Dirk's Mavs barely edges Nash's Suns in the Win/Loss factor.
Once again, I am a Lakers/Kobe fan. I wish he would have won MVP. I very much dislike Nash because Phoenix is killing LA right now. But for MVP, if not Kobe, it should have been Nash. No way is Dirk even close.

The MVP award is rewarding the best player during the regular season and not the playoffs as most of votes are done before the end of the regular season.
Moreover, you cannot compare one bad playoff game by Nowitski against 82 good regular season games.
Other MVP candidates (Kobe, Duncan) didn't play much better in their first games in the playoffs except Nash who I think is overated for being so bad in defense.

He doesn't deserve MVP. Steve Nash has done better in the playoffs and in the regular season than Dirk. Last season, Dirk averaged 26 points and 9 rebounds. This season, he only averages 24 points and 9 rebounds. Nash averaged 18 points this season and last season. His field goal percentage is up (51.2 to 53.2) as is his 3 point percentage (43.9 to 45.5). Dirk's field goal percentage is lower (50.2) this season than Nash's. Nash also averages 11 assists a game, which is up from last year's 10. Dirk only averaged 3 assists per game this season, only up from his 2 assists last season.
